Victorian SUP Titles 2012

The 2012 Surfing Victoria Stand Up Paddle State Titles were held on the 26th February based at Point Danger Torquay.

It was an early start for those in the Marathon Race, paddling 20km from Ocean Grove to Torquay in stiff cross/offshore winds.

Marathon 20km Race
Men:
1st - Cam Hosking
2nd - Heath Meldrum,
3rd - Luke French,

The Surfing which took place at Point Danger was at a high level right from the start.  The strong offshore winds proved trying at times (especially for keeping the BBQ alight) but by the time the finals came around it had eased to nicely groom the 2-3' waves.

Surfing Victoria did a great job, keeping the whole event ticking along with clock like precision to make sure the three disciplines got adequate time and resources to be successful.

Phill once again caused some lens envy.

Ant Stephens ripping it up in the over 40's

John Takle hacking his way to victory in the over 40's

Like father, like son, Matt Takle also shredding to take out the open mens.

The commentator said at one stage, "I think Graham Briggs has surfed every heat"

Will Cousins having a trip to the nose in the open mens final.

Graham Briggs (aka Sparks) was throwing water around that would have made a ye olde firemans bucket line proud.

Matt Takle showing why he took out the title.

Matt Lumley pushed the younger Takle all the way to take out second place in the open mens.

Sparks pushed his competitors both young and 'old' to make the open and over 40's final..

More senior Takle attack!

More of the Sparkle show.

Young gun Kristi Page took out the open womens this year.

Final results:

Surfing
Over 40’s Men:
1st -  John Takle
2nd - Graeme Briggs c
3rd - Courtney Dalton

 Open Mens:
1st - Matt Takle
2nd - Matthew Lumley
3rd - Graeme Briggs

Open Womens:
1st -  Kristi Page
2nd – Lucy Bell

Paul Harrington and Max Wells kept an eye on the conditions to plan a great course for the technical race.

It was spectacular to watch a whole field of 12'6" boards all scrambling to catch a wave across the point.

It was an exciting race to the finish, with the winner coming back from technical problems mid race to sweep past the field and take victory.

Technical Race
Mens:
1st - Heath Meldrum
2nd – Luke French
3rd – Zeb Walsh
Women:
Jean Ringrose Coyne

Chrsitmas Paddle and AGM December 2011

On Sunday 11th of November 2012 Bass Strait Stand Up Paddle Club held its Christmas Event (#5) & AGM.  Once again the plan was to hold the surf component at Raffs near Barwon Heads.

We all arrived from 7.30am and the swell had risen overnight  from 1' to 3' so we were amping each other up to have a crack, even with the 20 knot onshore.  However it was just too windy with the occasional 25 knot bullets pumping through so we moved over to the river.

As always it had been perfect THE DAY BEFORE..., 28 degrees, clean  and offshore.  With a good set up on the Barwon, we still had heaps of fun.

Matty and Maizey on the mini downwinder

Justin ready for the social down wind race to the boat ramp

It was supposed to be a social downwind paddle but competitive spirit / red bull kicked in as the flag dropped.....

Placings.......Leon 1st, Nick 2nd, Justin 3rd.

Courtney, Nick, Matty and Rusho paddled up wind looking for waves at the Heads

After two down wind runs and van shuffles,  a few more crew arrived so the BBQ was lit to cook up a feast for Christmas.

Everyone kicked back....

....before the 'serious' business of the AGM.

It was great to see a couple of new faces for the events in Oran and 'Box Head'

With the formal part of the day complete we packed up in record time, pumped for some waves, the convoy headed back to Raffs for a surf after discussions of a drop in  the wind.

It was good for a kite or windsurf but still no go for a SUP surf

Some drove back to Cosy corner Torquay where it was protected from the wind and finally scored some small peelers.

BASS SUP - wish to thank all our members for a fun 1st year and we are looking forward to seeing you in 2012.

We welcome new committee members in Nick, Graham (Sparx), Paul, Courtney and Justin with Matty M re-joining the committee and the office bearers being re-elected in Matt (President), Rich (Secretary) and Kev (Treasurer).

We would like to thank outgoing committee members Phill and Cam without whom the first year of the club would not have occurred as successfully and look forward to their continued participation in Bass SUP.

Bass Strait SUP Club event 5 Christmas BBQ and AGM

Hello Suppers,

Hope everyone has been scoring some epic waves.  It’s that time again, time to amp up for our next comp.

Even though conditions were small for Bass SUP event number four, with one foot waves at Ocean Grove, we made the most of it and had some fun.

Winds are looking favorable so let’s hope we get some swell for event number five which we are excited to announce will be on Sunday the 11th of December.

When – Sunday 11th November;
Start time – 8:30 am (for briefing) on the water by 9:00am;
Where – First car park on Ocean Grove side of Barwon Heads Bridge, right of Raff’s.

We are hoping to run a new format.  We have had requests to run some heats, so it’s time to run our first comp….. with a twist.  We have decided to run it with a two man team format.

How does it work????.  Two people will be put in a team together.  There could be an ‘A’ level surfer with a ‘C’ level surfer.  The Heat will run for 15 to 20 minutes.  The team will be scored on a total of 4 waves, 2 waves from each surfer.  The goal is to work together and get the best score you can.

The judging will be graded to suit your level of surfing so the ‘C’ level surfer may get a good score for a clean take off and a couple of good turns, while the ‘A’ level surfer will still have to ‘blow it up’ to get scored well.

You will be competing against 1 to 2 teams in each heat.  The goal is to get everyone participating, so there will be no elimination.  You will get to surf 2 to 3 times and the highest score wins.  It should be EPIC…

Don’t forget to slap on some sunscreen and leg ropes are compulsory.

Also, after the comp is done, we will be heading around to the river for a paddle, our Christmas BBQ and AGM.

So come on down, we want everyone to help shape the future of Bass Sup and get more people involved.

We are hoping to have a calendar of events planned for 2012 early in the New Year.  If you have any feedback on formats for events or locations that may be suitable, let us know.

Bass SUP event 4

Sunday 6th November saw event 4 for Bass SUP run on a 'quiet day' at Ocean Grove Main Beach.

Due to the lack of swell, Raffs just wasn't an option but the tiny waves breaking at Main Beach meant another great day was had by all.

Boards were demoed, snags were sacrificed a few pointers were given and by the end of the day everyone was tanned and tired.

Matt Martins fleet of GSI Demo Board got a solid work out and RPS' Fanatic Allwave was a popular board.

We kicked off at a little after 8.30am and before we knew it all the boards were out. The tiny waves on offer meant it was perfect for beginners to have a fun paddle.

John and Dianne had their first time surfing a SUP had a wow of a time Dianne caught umpteen waves and John came up the beach thinking he had done a 1000 sit ups after surfing for 2 hours.

Tons of passers by including mums dads and kids all took interest, we signed up some new members, sold a heap of snags and if the sign of a successful event is the number of smiles around the beach then this one was alltime.

Thanks to the Melbourne crew that headed on down, it was great to meet some new people or catch up with those people we have seen on the Yarra or at the Melbourne races.

Big thanks need to go Phill, Kristi, Nesha and Nicki Page who helped make the day a success, thanks to Matty Martin for the tent and GSI board fleet.  Also all the usual suspects Rich, Lummers, Kev, Lazza, Sparks, Justin, the local crew and everyone else for an all time fun session in small waves.

A big thanks goes to Farm Foods again for their support and tasty sausages.

Bass Strait SUP Club – November 2011

Unfortunately conditions were not kind for Bass SUP event number three, which was cancelled due to the strong south easterlies.  Thanks to all those who dropped down to say G’day anyway and also to Lazza for making the trip across on the ferry.
Let’s hope that we get favourable swell and winds for event number four which we are excited to announce will be on Sunday the 6th of November.
When – Sunday 6th November;
Start time – 8:30 am (for briefing) on the water by 9:00am;
Where – First car park on Ocean Grove side of Barwon Heads Bridge, right of Raff’s, (location of first event).

We are hoping to run our normal expression session format with a follow up BBQ and flat water paddle on the river (18W).
If there is enough interest from the more accomplished, competitive SUPers we may run some short heats for them to push each others surfing and put on a good show.
Don’t forget to bring sunscreen and leg ropes are compulsory.
Also, put Sunday 11th December in your diaries for our Christmas paddle, BBQ and AGM
We are hoping to have a calendar of events planned for 2012 early in the New Year.  If you have any feedback on formats for events or locations that may be suitable let us know.
Cheers
