A cold morning for July's club day

From one end of the Surfcoast to the other we were greeted to a chilly Vicco morning

As our luck would have it, the waves that had been hanging round for a few days had disappeared.

The fact that the sun was out (for a change) meant that everyone was still keen to hang around and have a paddle. It was great to see a few families being dragged along too.

Rusho in his snow gear.

Deano was the first to hit the water

Some big boards headed down the point

 MJ slid into a few

As did Woody

Warwick was busy testing boards

Heaps of  people just hit the ankle slappers out the front at Draino's

Kristi headed down the point too
 Lummers decided to go finless

Sparx, for something different on a left

We were wondering about a collective noun for SUPers as the guys who had paddled way down the coast mixed with those who had stuck around out the front.

As we watched the action on the water, a young fella on his little BMX still sporting training wheels decided to add some Travis Pastrana style action and launch off the end of the beach 'runway' clearing the rocks head first and landing about 4 meters across the rocks onto the sand. Thankfully the only damage done was some sore aggots.

Rich, loving his new Laguna

Another new Laguna, This time John T's

As everyone dried off, Big Kev snuck out on Nick's new Quatro to catch a few lumpy ones on the point.

Thanks to everyone for sticking around and enjoying the day, cheers to the Melbourne crew for making the trip down. Congrats to John Lane for taking out the Ripcurl watch spot prize.

Lets hope we get both sunshine and some good waves for our next club day on the 9th of September.

We have a Bass SUP club day coming up on Sunday the 8th of July.

We will run proceedings at Torquay (Draino's /Pt. Danger) starting at 9:30 am.

Depending on conditions we are hoping to run some competitive heats, also hold an expression session too. The goal is to have fun and you can pick and choose what you feel like entering on the day.

There will be up for grabs a new Rip Curl Ultimate Tide master Watch, this will be drawn via a lucky dip. So you have to be there to win it..

If nothing else we will have a BBQ and a catch up.

Hope to catch up with everyone then.

UPDATE for Second comp on Saturday 12th May

Swell conditions are looking great for our second comp on Saturday 12th May in the 4-6'range forecast at this stage, however the wind direction from the West is not favourable when strong 20kn + at OG main beach.

We will still meet at OG main beach site to make the call at 8.30am for where the comp will be ran.

Our Back up location (Map below) is the first car park on right beachside past Barwon heads bridge (Area 20W - protected more from wind)

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Sat , bring on the "light offshore breeze"!!

Second comp for 2012, Saturday 12th May, Ocean Grove main beach.

Bass Strait stand up paddle club will be running our second comp of the year next weekend (Saturday 12th May) at Ocean Grove main beach.

The concept will be the same as last time, you will get to surf 2 heats (Guarantee). Your first heat will be with any one, it could be the red hot surfer that you look at and wonder how you will beat him. The best part is you don't, it doesn't matter. How it will works, your scores from your first heat will work out your final. If you’re in the Top 4 scores you go it to the A final, the next 4 scores go to the B final and so on. This way you get to surf with any one at the start and then you get to surf in a final at your level. Its built for fun and to help you ease into a comp format.

Where – to the left of Ocean Grove Main Beach Boat ramp.
When - Saturday 12th May.
Briefing – 8.30am with an 9am start.

So come one come all, new members welcomed and we will be having a BBQ lunch straight after the final.

Check out our new Club hoodies on the day $40 each !!

All competitors must be 2012 Bass Sup financial members to enter.

Hope to see you there

Round 1 - 11th March 2012

After our previous run of bad luck conditions wise, we had our finger crossed that event 1 for 2012 was going to have surf.

Besides being the first event for 2012 it was planned on being our first "heat format" surfing competition.

With the mix of ability levels in the club, we wanted to make sure everyone surfed two heats, got to mix it up in the water with all skills levels, as well as push themselves against surfers of a similar calibre.

With this in mind, every ones first heat was a random draw who you surfed with.  The second round of heat placements was decided via a ranking from each persons two highest wave scores from round one.

The top four scores were virtually the "A" final, next four "B" final and the "C's" composed of a three man final heat.

Thankfully there were waves!  Low tide Ocean Grove main beach had some small clean waves pushing through for us.

Everyone bustled to get the tent set up, rego's signed, heats placements sorted and get in the water.

 The first walkout.

Sparx as usual, was looking for the lefts to smash.

Sparrow swooping off the bottom....
.....then off the top.

Alan looking down the line.

Ant staying close to the curl.

John going hard.....
....and driving down the line.

 Leon using the rail......

...and drawing some S's.

Kev just stoked to be on the water.

Tom and Leon both made some new friends.

Tom was frothing as usual and cranking some nice turns.

The judging was a very serious business!

New member Dave was a welcome addition.

Digging deep for one of the better waves of the day.
Michael showed the groms how it was done.

Lummers span and slashed his way to victory, making the most of the small conditions.

As the 'C' graders headed out, the first hint of the sea breeze was coming through.
While maybe  not as high performance as the other finals, the "C's" were just as competitive with Dave, Kev and Alan making sure they were catching just as many waves as each other. The placings here were Kev and Dave tied with Alan only a smidgen behind.

The level of surfing in the 'B' final was easily as high as the "A's" and any of these guys could have done well in that final.  This was taken out by Tom followed by Michael, Leon and John.

Sparx, Ant and Sparrow all pushed Lummers in the 'A' final in the rapidly deteriorating conditions.  With final placings being Matt, Sparx, Ant then Sparrow.

To the victors went the spoils.

With each final winner taking home some refreshments for the afternoon kindly supplied by VB.

We'd like to thank all those that turned up, helped out and made it an awesome morning.

Our next event was originally scheduled for the 13th of May but someone reminded us this was mothers day.  So the next event will be Saturday the 12th of May.  Further dates to put in the diary for the rest of the year are the 8th of July, 9th of September and 11th of November with more detail on each event to follow.

Hopefully we will see you in the soup sometime soon.

Cheers
