Sunday November 11th 2012

Sparx had been keeping his eye on our planned comp site for the week leading up to our last surfing event for 2012.  After some late night phone calls, texts and emails on the Friday, the call was made to shift from 'Smitties' at Ocean Grove around to 'The Ant' at 13th Beach.

The shift paid off big time and we got cracking little waist to shoulder high waves, offshore winds, sunshine, lefts and rights and a nice timber platform and boardwalk for Bass SUP base camp.

The tent was setup, registrations were taken and the heat list was drawn up as quick as possible.  The contest briefing was given and the hooter sounded for round one, heat one.

Round one had four randomly drawn heats where 17 surfers of mixed ages, genders and skill levels battled it out together and then their scores were used to decide the round two heat order.

I won't bore you with a blow by blow, we flew through the 20 minute heats to make the most of the conditions, only stopping for a minutes silence between rounds.  Matt Takle took out top honors for the day and you can check the rest of the results at the end of the pics.

A few other highlights of the day were:
  • Chris Clark's vertical attack;
  • John Lane's classic drop knee cutties;
  • Matt and John Takle splitting a wave in the 'penultimate heat' and shredding it both ways;
  • The Juniors James and Kristi getting amongst it and seeing James shredding on his shorty between heats;
  • Seeing Sparx go right for a change;
  • Nick and Leon's classic commentary from the judging table;
  • Dark horse Mick Smith taking it to Sparx and the Takles in the 'final';

Conditions at this early stage are looking good for some small but clean waves.

Bass SUPers at the nationals and change of date for next event.

All of us at the club want to say a big congratulations to the Bass SUP members who represented Victoria at the recent nationals.

Matt and John Takle, Kristi Page, Graham (Sparx) Briggs, Matt Lumley, Nick Maloney, Paul Harrington, Justin Ormond and Michael Jenkins all made the trek up to Port Macquarie.  Special mention to Kristi Page and John Takle for making their respective finals but well done everyone.

We know you have all been counting down the days till our next event but unfortunately you will have to wait one week longer.

We are really keen to get another comp running so in the interests of a higher likelihood for better waves, taking into account the tides, we have decided to push the next club day back one week.  Rather than the 9th of September as originally scheduled the event will now be on Sunday the 16th of September at Ocean Grove Main Beach near the amenities block at the top of the Surfboat ramp.

We will have an 8:00 am meet up for an 8:30 am start.

Please Note – all crew competing must be 2012 financial members on the day.

Apologies to anyone that the change of date may inconvenience.

We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Cheers

A cold morning for July's club day

From one end of the Surfcoast to the other we were greeted to a chilly Vicco morning

 As our luck would have it, the waves that had been hanging round for a few days had disappeared.

The fact that the sun was out (for a change) meant that everyone was still keen to hang around and have a paddle. It was great to see a few families being dragged along too.

Rusho in his snow gear.

Deano was the first to hit the water

Some big boards headed down the point

 MJ slid into a few

As did Woody

Warwick was busy testing boards

Heaps of  people just hit the ankle slappers out the front at Draino's

 Kristi headed down the point too
 Lummers decided to go finless

We were wondering about a collective noun for SUPers as the guys who had paddled way down the coast mixed with those who had stuck around out the front.

 As we watched the action on the water, a young fella on his little BMX still sporting training wheels decided to add some Travis Pastrana style action and launch off the end of the beach 'runway' clearing the rocks head first and landing about 4 meters across the rocks onto the sand. Thankfully the only damage done was some sore aggots.

Rich, loving his new Laguna

 Another new Laguna, This time John T's

 As everyone dried off, Big Kev snuck out on Nick's new Quatro to catch a few lumpy ones on the point.

Thanks to everyone for sticking around and enjoying the day, cheers to the Melbourne crew for making the trip down. Congrats to John Lane for taking out the Ripcurl watch spot prize.

Lets hope we get both sunshine and some good waves for our next club day on the 9th of September.
