Bass Strait Stand Up Paddle Club first event

Bass Strait Stand Up Paddle Club held it’s inaugural event on Saturday 5th March 2011.

The schedule for the day was for an expression session in the waves near Raff’s beach, Ocean Grove and a social paddle & BBQ down by the Barwon river.

The forecast swell was for 3-4 foot, but the South East onshore wind made for choppy conditions with wind gusts up to 20 knots.  However, a dozen keen members, some family and a couple of dogs made the most of the sunny day.

The decision was made to cancel the expression session and head over the road to area 18w on the river.  The grassy bank was ideal to set up the tent and BBQ and do a group social paddle to the bridge and back while swapping boards and story's.

Conditions were just perfect for all skill levels with a light off shore here. We were all amped to hit the water and headed up to the Barwon bridge.

Simon & Mateo called past to check out the action.

Kev brought along his new inflatable SUP (below left) that we all demoed and enjoyed.

Dave Peterson and Paul Harrington made the trek from Melbourne with a brand new Fanatic 14 which everyone was super keen to paddle;

Kev did lots of work for Bass Sup prior to the day , that made it a huge success;

Phill was the master chef and supplied an endless stream of BBQ on the day and his organisational skills before hand were very much appreciated.  Thanks Phill!

Some other highlights for the day were:
  • Briggsy trying Kristi's DC 8'0", when he managed to stand on it he was waist deep;
  • Stuart and Lou's Labrador, Fletcher, having his first paddle;
  • Phill's BBQ setup and the gourmet Farm Foods snags;
  • The glassy conditions and fast in coming tide on the paddle back upstream;
  • The look of relief on Rich's face when cracking a cold stubby after all his hard work and all the gear was packed up after a successful day.
Everyone who attended walked away with some amazing give-a-way prizes from our fantastic sponsors.

Bass Sup appreciated David Nankervis' help volunteering his safety expertise.

Big thank you to our sponsors
